Range Rover Dakar - Allan Lane, Gloucestershire

Fun for all the family with this 'Dakar' Rangie.

Fun for all the family with this 'Dakar' Rangie. It's based on a 1972 model
It's based on a 1972 modelLast year's Billing was our first visit to a Land Rover event in our Range Rover-based Dakar kit. The vehicle has been on the road since April last year and has already been pressed into service carrying the family and towing our caravan. The Dakar is dad's toy; mum's family runabout is a 110 County turbo-diesel. As you can see, we are a 100 per cent Land Rover family.
Base vehicle for the Dakar is a 1972 Range Rover, with all standard running gear, floor, bulkhead and dashboard. The only chassis modification is shortening of the back end. A substantial side frame and roll cage was attached to the standard bodv mounting points. This was then clothed with a GRP body with soft top and doors to make a practical year round vehicle with good heater and demister.
It was too new to get dirty at Billing last year, but this year I’ve booked to do the off-road course, my first venture into the mud.
A suggestion for novices like myself at Billing. Will any experienced off-roaders volunteer to ride as passengers and pass on advice as to how it should be done? My only off-road experience so far has been getting the caravan off a muddy campsite!
